In the previous blog we enjoyed pictures of bonsai plants in bloom, especially one of the favorites, azaleas. In this blog we study different species of trees that bonsai masters have carefully pruned and watered allowing to become ancient specimens in perfect health. Hours can be devoted to pruning a few needles from a tree and transplanting is an art that one must see to believe. To have the opportunity to view a bonsai that has been handed down from great grandfathers to grandfathers to fathers and sons with all the knowledge about a particular plant from generations back is special experience. The resultant bonsai's are almost always breathtaking. Here are some of the many tree forms displayed in the Wikipedia article on bonsai.

A white pine grown in the United States National Arboretum, one of many gifts from the Japanese government.

I had the special blessing to see this and other beautiful specimens at the National Arboretum many years ago.

A magnificent Bald Cypress

Lastly, one of my favorites, a forest of trees through which one can look at eternity.
